Q: What is an elective prenatal ultrasound?
A: We offer elective 2D and 3D/4D/HDlive™ prenatal ultrasounds to provide a positive bonding experience for the mother, father, and family members with the unborn baby. We feel that realistic surface images provide a connection between the parents and baby that can be beneficial to the whole family. We make no claims that 3D, as used in this examination, is performed to better assess the baby for abnormalities. A routine ultrasound examination should have already been performed to assess the gestational age of the fetus and to evaluate for fetal anomalies as well as the basic components of fetal anatomy recommended for screening.
Q: Can I get my ultrasound that my doctor prescribes here?
A: Absolutely NOT. We in no way, at any time, are to be confused with or replace a diagnostic ultrasound or medical exam/test. We ask that women seeking an elective ultrasound with our facility must already be receiving care from a physician/Obstetrician for prenatal care. We do not screen for fetal abnormalities, diagnose fetal size/weight, or look for any other pregnancy related issues. This is strictly an elective ultrasound for your enjoyment and bonding experience.
Q: What kind of ultrasound machine do you have?
A: At Baby In Me 3D Ultrasound, we use a GE Voluson E6 - 3D/4D ultrasound machine with HDlive™ technology.
Q: What is the difference between 2D, 3D, and 4D ultrasounds?
A: 2D, 3D, and 4D are trademarked terminology used in the industry to distinguish the different types of ultrasound pictures and videos that can be provided.
2D ultrasound is the traditional method used for years. They provide flat, two-dimensional, black and white images of your baby. This is the type of ultrasound that was used for your diagnostic ultrasound. It is still the best technology for gathering measurements of the baby and it can assess the inside organs of your baby to ensure they are developing as expected which 3D/4D is not able to obtain.
3D shows the surface structures of the baby, which is more like real pictures. It is an advanced, three-dimensional image of your baby, often allowing the ability to see specific facial features and well-defined formation. The color is actually not the color of the baby but is computer enhanced to make the pictures more appealing.
4D refers to the 4th dimension, which is time. 4D is 3D images but in real-time, as opposed to a still 3D image of your baby. It is a short moving clip of your baby in 3D.
Q: What is HDlive™?
A: HDlive™ is a newer, state of the art, imaging technology developed by GE that is only available on GE units, which we have! Ultrasounds with 3D imaging have been around for years, but GE’s HDlive ultrasound technology uses a unique and moveable light source that not only provides both 3D and 4D imaging, but lights up the baby, making it possible for soon-to-be-parents to see the facial expressions and a more realistic view of their baby. You experience exceptional anatomical realism with HDlive™ technology for 3D and 4D imaging.
Q: Is it safe? Are there any risks to me, or my baby?
A: Ultrasound is a safe procedure that uses low-power sound waves. There are no known harmful side effects. Ultrasound imaging has been used for over 30 years and has an excellent safety record. It is based on non-ionizing radiation, so it does not have the same risks as X-rays or other types of imaging systems that use ionizing radiation. While ultrasound is generally considered to be safe with very low risks, the risks may increase with unnecessary prolonged exposure to ultrasound energy, or when untrained users operate the device. At Baby In Me 3D Ultrasound our technologist is formally trained with 15 years of experience in the field and is a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, so you can be assured that your session will be done with the safety of you and your baby always in mind.
